Spring semester Course on Conflicts in Species Conservation organized by ForDev

Integriertes Praktikum at ETH: Wolf in Switzerland. Addressing a Swiss conservation challenge using ComMod.

by Charlotte Pavageau

This Spring Semester, the ForDev group organized an integrated practical course at ETH on conflict in the context of species conservation.The course was focussed on the case study of the wolf in Switzerland. The aim of the course is to demonstrate how conflicts among stakeholders can be resolved to achieve a mutually agreed consensus.

Using the ComMod approach, six games have been developed in two Blocks:

  • Urban vs Countryside (a negotiation game);
  • Wolf vs Hunter (a teaching game);
  • “Sheepdash” (assessing wolf acceptance);
  • Wolf in Kt. Wallis (a 3D model -- understanding challenges in sheep farming);
  • Sheep farming (economic gain vs tradition)
  • Sheep farming (herd protection or shooting the wolf?)
